UFO SPOTTED OVER DONCASTER CAR DEALERSHIP

It certainly seemed so when, at 2:30pm on Monday over 1,000 biodegradable balloons were simultaneously released from Perrys Vauxhall on Wheatley Hall Road, to launch the Aurora Charity Balloon Race. The balloon release formed part of the massive celebrations which took place at the Perrys site over the bank holiday as the dealership hosted a nostalgically themed party to mark its 100th birthday.

Said Perrys’ General Manager, Stephen Eyre: “It’s not everyday that you get to celebrate your 100th birthday, which is why we decided to do it in style. We’ve had everything from party entertainers, live music and hot food, to the Aurora charity balloon release and launch of the new Vauxhall Agila, and fun was had by all who attended.”

The balloon release ties in with the site’s sponsorship of the Aurora Fashion Show, which is taking place on May 15th and 16th at the Doncaster Dome, in order to raise money for the charity which is dedicated to making the lives of cancer suffers as enjoyable as possible.

All the balloons released were sponsored by members of the public, with a reward of £50 being offered to anyone who finds, and returns, the first balloon.

The dealership also staged a free to enter competition in conjunction with a local radio station to win a brand new Vauxhall Agila, the winner of which will be announced shortly.

A group of Doncaster youngsters have beaten Little Britain funny man David Walliams in a national competition to find the best charity fundraiser.

The group of Millennium volunteers from Links 4 Youth, Dearne Valley, beat the star’s £1million cross channel charity swim into second place.

They won the Third Sector Award of Excellence for Best Fundraising Event in Britain 2007, for their efforts to raise cash for the Aurora Centre.

The youngsters, who staged a fashion show earlier this year, raised £1,900.

They were involved in every aspect of the event, from organising the venue to modelling on the catwalk.

Group co-ordinator Jill Arkley-Jevons said: "These dedicated young people gave up every Tuesday evening and some Sundays to rehearse scenes and learn sewing skills.

“Their aim was to try and beat the £1,300 they raised for Aurora the previous year - without any costs being incurred.

“It’s great that they have won the award.

“They should feel very proud of what they’ve achieved,” she said.

James Bond Theme Night

The bond evening was a great success.

Everyone had a fantastic time. The entertainment was brilliant and the band Diesel Vanilla was fabulous. We also had a crooner, Mark Webster aka ‘Blurter’, who was fantastic.

Thorne Rural Lions provided the Casino, and they did a brilliant job. Everyone made a fantastic effort dressing up, and there were some fantastic Bonds and Bond girls! In total, we raised £1249.55 for the Aurora Centre, which was great because that was what the evening was all about!

I would like to thank everyone who attended and gave so generously to this worthwhile charity. Also a big thank you to everyone who donated prizes, including ‘Arrive in Style’ who donated a luxury limousine ride, and a big thank you to our sponsors – Thorne Hydraulics Ltd and Andy Candler Motor Engineers. In addition, a well-earned thank you to my entertainment manager Neil Kent who worked tirelessly throughout the evening and made it the success it was.
